Based on every 12-month stretch of actual movement since 2019: fast is the top quarter of paces, slow the bottom quarter. Dates can also retrogress.

EB-2 or EB-3: which reaches you first?

For your priority date and country, compare both categories on this month’s bulletin and their historical pace. Switching needs a new I-140; ask your attorney.

Switching categories (often called a downgrade or upgrade) usually keeps the same priority date, but it has costs and risks. This is information, not legal advice.

Questions about the Visa Bulletin

What is the difference between final action dates and dates for filing?

Final action dates decide when a green card can be approved. Dates for filing decide when you can submit I-485 and wait in line. USCIS says each month which chart it uses for filing.

What is my priority date?

For PERM-based cases it is usually the date the PERM application was filed with DOL. For categories without PERM, such as EB-1 and NIW, it is the date USCIS received the I-140.

When is the Visa Bulletin published?

The State Department usually publishes the next month’s bulletin around the middle of the month. We update this page soon after.

What does Current mean?

There is no queue in that category: any priority date can be approved or filed.
